ABOUT
Who we are and what we do
Matibabu Foundation is a non-profit organization that exists to build informed, healthy and prosperous rural communities. It was established in 2001.
Matibabu Foundation is based in the rural community of Western Kenya in Siaya County, offering medical services to over 200,000 people in dire need of access to professional healthcare.
The Foundation runs an accredited hospital, satellite clinics and pharmacies and a Nursing College within the community.
Daniel Ogola was only seven years old when his young brother passed away at just two months old to a treatable case of malaria. He then spent any little pocket money he received from family and friends to buy paracetamol tablets and disseminated them to anyone he saw was unwell. Even as a child he knew that healthcare wasn’t just essential but should be made affordable. He also realized that without proper information members of his community couldn’t make informed decisions for themselves and their loved ones’ healthcare.
After years of starting and running a community-based organisation in Kibra slums in Nairobi where Dan resided in his teens to early twenties, he started to yearn to give back to his rural community.
In 2004 after meeting an exchange student from the Students International Training (SIT) program, he was introduced to Dr Gale Wagner, a medical doctor from the US who was eager to offer her support. Together with Dr Wagner, Patrick Amenya, Christopher Owang’, Benta Amenya, Benedict Osieyo, Paul Njihia, Daniel commenced the community healthcare program in his rural home, Ukwala, Ugenya in Western Kenya. It was there that health camps with doctors from the US commenced in 2004 which birthed the Matibabu Foundation.
